Chapter Ten

NEKKO

“Who died!” I barked into my comm because it had better be that fucking important to interrupt me when I was about to form a bond with my spirit mate.

“You have a visitor,” Draggar’s voice barked back. “And it brought friends.”

The it was what propelled me off the hut floor and away from my female. The it was Ki! I wondered as I apologized to Gia and helped her up from our makeshift pallet of furs on the hut’s floor, how many friends had come along. This could be the turning point in the war to save our world.

Though nothing was as important as my mate, this came a close second. If I couldn’t protect her from all dangers, that now included beings from the stars, then I was not worthy of her.

“Sorry to cut our time short, sweetling, but its Ki and his allies.” I lifted her discarded kiltus-dress from the floor and helped her into it, smoothed her riot of curls away from her face, and planted a gentle kiss on her ravaged lips. “I promise to make it up to you when I get back. Come on, I’ll escort you to the palace first.”

“It’s fine, but you don’t need to escort me. Go do your warrior thing. I’ve walked the grounds of Huren for weeks now. Nothing will happen to me under the dome. Besides, I want to straighten up in here before I go.”

“Yes.” I scanned the darkening space. “It does look like someone has been entertaining their spirit mate in here.” I chuckled at the suddenly vivid shade of her complexion, straightened my kiltus, and the strap of my sword still attached to my back. “You’re certain you don’t want an escort?”

“Positive.” Gia shooed me toward the exit. “You better get going and not keep Ki waiting.”

“I’m going,” I laughed as she nudged me out the door. I started down the path, then turned and walked backward. “Where can I find you later?”

“Depends on how long your meeting last. Rowan wanted me to meet her in the cookery for mealtime while Zikkar did some tech thing in the command center,” Gia said. “If I miss you there, then you can find me in your bed—naked.”

Like an untried fledgling, the image of my Gia spread out on my bed, stripped me of all other thoughts except her. I tripped over my booted feet and landed on my ass. In an effort to save my pride, I rolled backward and sprang to my feet with a flourish.

Gia giggled as I blew her a kiss then turned and ran toward the south side of the dome where I had told Ki to come. I hated to leave my spirit mate, especially as close as we had been to completing the bond, but Sia Jakkar would be expecting me as Ki was the only Valosian the Nuttaki trusted.

As I rounded the squat structure where meat was cured and dried into strips for rations, it was impossible to miss the group of warriors facing off at the dome’s perimeter.
